Tomar, the Templars and Almourol Castle

Tomar is famous for being the former seat of the Order of the Templar Knights later converted in the Order of Christ in Portugal. In this tour we’ll visit the medieval castle of Tomar and the precious Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then we’ll stroll around the streets of Tomar and visit the 15th century synagogue. Constância is on the way to visit is island Castle of Almourol in the river Tejo. Eventually there will be time for a kaiak ride in the river or a swim in the big lake Castelo do Bode.

This tour is flexible and will be planned according to your interests.

Tomar Castle and Convent of Christ

When Tomar was conquered to the moors it was given to the Templar Order in 1159. Visit the medieval castle and the Convent of Christ inside the castle walls. The Convent features “Charola”, a round chapel from the 12th century which is a medieval art masterpiece. It also features a famous Manuelin (king Manuel I) architecture window from a later period. The whole complex is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Tomar old town

Tomar old town is a medieval urban area with cross shaped streets looking up to the castle hill. The old 15th century synagogue is a great example of the jewish presence until the early 16th century expulsion order by king D.Manuel I. The Church of São João Baptista is a highlight of Tomar situated in Praça da República always with the imposing castle above. Taste the local pastries in the coffe shops.


Constância is the small town where the river Zêzere (the most important affluent) meets the Tejo. It is very picturesque and pleasant to walk around the castle. If you’d like enjoy an hour paddle in the river for a look out to Almourol Castle. It is also a great location for lunch.

Almourol Castle

Almourol Castle was taken to the moors in 1129 and given to the Templars. It became then an important piece of the defensive line of the Tejo river. It looks magnificent in the river island. The visit is done by a small boat ride from the north bank.

Aldeia da Mata

Do something a bit different on a Tour and have a swim in the warm waters of Castelo do Bode lake for a relaxing last part of the Tour. Mingle with the locals and have a beer looking out the beautiful landscape. This location has a strucutre and official lifeguard.
