Tower of Belém and Portuguese Discoveries
Belém district is a fantastic living memory of the Portuguese Discoveries that started in the 15th century and pioneered oceanic navigation around the world. Tower of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery from the early 16th century are the highlights of this period and of Manuelin architecture. The Monuments of Discoveries opened in 1960 and honours the Portuguese Navigators.
From this lookout point in Monsanto Park you can see the whole city from above with overwhelming views. It is in an old abandoned restaurant complex that was recently transformed into a street art spot. It is amazing how you can see the city but also the whole Tejo estuary to the Arrábida mountains and Palmela Castle.
In São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint you have a wonderful view to the Castle Hill and the river. From here you can stroll around the streets of Bairro Alto, visit the beautiful São Roque Church, Carmo Ruins and go down to Baixa via the Gloria Elevator or the Santa Justa Elevator or even walking downwards via Chiado.
Sailing the Tejo
Sail the Tejo and enjoy the breeze in the river and the silence of sailing only with the wind. Watch the boats in the estuary, the monuments in the north bank while crossing underneath the bridge towards the sunset enjoying a drink.
